Glossary / Front post double crochet
fpdcFront post double crochet
A double crochet worked around the post of a stitch, pushing it forward. UK front post treble.
How to work it
Yarn over, then insert your hook from front to back to front again around the post (the vertical body) of the stitch below, instead of under its top loops. Complete the double crochet as usual. The stitch sits raised on the front of the fabric, and alternating front and back post stitches makes crochet ribbing and cables. In UK terms this is a front post treble (fptr), because a US double crochet is a UK treble.
US and UK
This stitch is also called Front post treble (UK). Always check which term set a pattern uses before you start, since the same name can mean a different stitch across the two.
Common confusions
What does fpdc mean?
In crochet patterns, fpdc means Front post double crochet. A double crochet worked around the post of a stitch, pushing it forward. UK front post treble.
Where exactly does the hook go?
Around the vertical post of the stitch below, not under the top loops. Enter from the front, pass behind the post, and come back out to the front, so the post is captured by the hook. The stitch then stands proud on the side facing you.
Does a post stitch change my stitch count?
No. It replaces the stitch it wraps rather than adding one, so the row total stays the same. The fabric does get narrower and denser, which is why post-stitch ribbing pulls in like knitted ribbing does.
