Glossary / Popcorn stitch
pcPopcorn stitch
A group of finished stitches folded and pulled closed into a raised pouch.
Also written: pop
How to work it
Work five complete double crochets into the same stitch. Slip the loop off your hook, insert the hook into the top of the first of those five stitches from front to back, pick the dropped loop back up, and pull it through. The group folds forward into a firm, rounded pouch. Popcorns stand further off the fabric than any other texture stitch, which makes them good for berries, grapes, and strong relief on blankets.
Common confusions
What does pc mean?
In crochet patterns, pc means Popcorn stitch. A group of finished stitches folded and pulled closed into a raised pouch.
Which side does a popcorn pop out on?
The side facing you as you work it, because the fold pulls toward you. A bobble is the opposite and pushes away from you, which is why bobbles are usually made on wrong-side rows and popcorns on right-side rows. If your texture ended up on the back, the row side is the thing to check.
Do I lose my loop when I take it off the hook?
Only if you let it go. Pinch the loop or place a locking stitch marker in it before you insert the hook. Once you have picked it back up through the first stitch the popcorn is secure, and a slightly enlarged loop makes it much easier to catch again.
