Slip slip knit

A left-leaning decrease, the mirror of k2tog.

KnittingDecrease

How to work it

Slip two stitches one at a time knitwise onto the right needle, then insert the left needle through their front loops and knit them together from that position. It removes one stitch and leans to the left, mirroring k2tog for tidy paired decreases.

Common confusions

What does ssk mean?

Slip, slip, knit. Slip two stitches one at a time knitwise onto the right needle, then insert the left needle through the front of both and knit them together from that position. It removes one stitch and leans left, mirroring k2tog.

Why is my ssk looser and untidier than my k2tog?

It is a known quirk of the stitch, because the slipped stitches sit slightly stretched. Slipping the second stitch purlwise instead of knitwise tightens it up noticeably, and is a common fix designers recommend for matching a crisp k2tog on the other edge.
