Double crochet two together

Two double crochets worked together into one, for a gentle taper.

CrochetDecreaseUS terms

Also written: dc dec

How to work it

Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops, leaving two loops on the hook. Repeat that half-finished double crochet in the following stitch, which leaves three loops. Yarn over and pull through all three. It removes one stitch and blends into tall-stitch fabric far better than skipping a stitch does.

US and UK

This stitch is also called tr2tog (UK). Always check which term set a pattern uses before you start, since the same name can mean a different stitch across the two.

Common confusions

What does dc2tog mean?

In crochet patterns, dc2tog means Double crochet two together. Two double crochets worked together into one, for a gentle taper.

Why does dc2tog look like it has a hole?

Usually because the two half-finished stitches were worked at different tensions, or the yarn was pulled tight between them. Keep the loops the same size and work the second half of the decrease with the same rhythm as the first. A dc2tog will always be slightly more open than a plain double crochet, which is normal.

Can I just skip a stitch instead?

You can, and some patterns do, but skipping leaves a visible gap because nothing spans the missing stitch. dc2tog closes the space with yarn, so the fabric stays even. Skipping is fine in lace where holes are the point, and wrong in a solid garment.
