The standard crochet decrease: two single crochets closed into one stitch.

How to work it
Insert your hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop without finishing the stitch, so two loops sit on the hook. Insert into the following stitch and pull up a loop, giving three loops. Yarn over and pull through all three. Two stitches have become one and your count drops by one. This is the everyday decrease for hats, garments, and any shaping that does not need to be invisible.

This stitch is also called dc2tog (UK). Always check which term set a pattern uses before you start, since the same name can mean a different stitch across the two.

What does sc2tog mean?
In crochet patterns, sc2tog means Single crochet two together. The standard crochet decrease: two single crochets closed into one stitch.
What is the difference between sc2tog and the invisible decrease?
sc2tog works under both loops of each stitch and leaves a small bump and a slight gap. The invisible decrease works into the front loops only, which closes the gap and sits flat. Use sc2tog for flat fabric and garments, and the invisible decrease for amigurumi where stuffing could show through.
Does a finished sc2tog count as one stitch or two?
One. The decrease consumes two stitches from the row below but produces a single stitch, so when you tally the row at the end, count it once. Counting it twice is the usual reason a decrease round comes out one stitch short.
