Glossary / Slip one, knit two together, pass over
sk2pSlip one, knit two together, pass over
A double decrease that removes two stitches and leans left.
Also written: sl1-k2tog-psso
How to work it
Slip one stitch knitwise to the right needle. Knit the next two stitches together. Then lift the slipped stitch over the k2tog and off the needle. Three stitches become one, so your count drops by two. The finished decrease leans firmly to the left, which makes it the standard choice for the left side of a raglan or the descending line of a lace motif.
Common confusions
What does sk2p mean?
In knitting patterns, sk2p means Slip one, knit two together, pass over. A double decrease that removes two stitches and leans left.
What is the difference between sk2p and cdd?
Both remove two stitches, but they look different. sk2p leans left, with the stitches stacking to one side. cdd, the centred double decrease, stands upright with a raised stitch straight up the middle. Patterns pick one for its look, so swapping them changes the line of the shaping.
Do I slip the first stitch knitwise or purlwise?
Knitwise, unless the pattern says otherwise. Slipping knitwise reorients the stitch so it sits correctly when you pass it over, which is what gives sk2p its clean left lean. Slipping purlwise leaves the stitch twisted at the top.
