Also written: s2kp, sl2-k1-p2sso

How to work it

Slip two stitches together knitwise, as if to knit two together. Knit the next stitch. Then pass both slipped stitches over it and off the needle. Three stitches become one and your count drops by two. Because the middle stitch ends up sitting on top, the decrease points straight up rather than leaning, which makes a crisp vertical spine down a shawl, mitre, or hat crown.

Common confusions

What does cdd mean?

In knitting patterns, cdd means Centered double decrease. A double decrease that stands straight up with a raised centre stitch.

Why must I slip both stitches together?

Slipping them at the same time keeps their order, so the middle stitch lands on top when you pass them over. Slipping them one at a time swaps them, and the decrease loses its centred look and starts leaning. This single detail is what makes a cdd centred.

Is s2kp the same abbreviation?

Yes. s2kp, sl2-k1-p2sso, and cdd all describe the same three-into-one decrease. Patterns choose whichever notation they prefer, so if you see any of them, work the same stitch.
