Glossary / Double treble crochet
dtrDouble treble crochet
A very tall stitch that starts with three yarn overs. Triple treble in UK terms.
Also written: dtrc
How to work it
Yarn over three times, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (five loops on the hook). Then yarn over and pull through two loops, four times over, until one loop remains. It is one step taller than a treble and needs a turning chain of five. Double trebles turn up in lace, openwork shawls, and anywhere a pattern wants a lot of height in a single row.
US and UK
This stitch is also called Triple treble (UK). Always check which term set a pattern uses before you start, since the same name can mean a different stitch across the two.
Common confusions
What does dtr mean?
In crochet patterns, dtr means Double treble crochet. A very tall stitch that starts with three yarn overs. Triple treble in UK terms.
Is dtr the same as tr?
No. A treble (tr) starts with two yarn overs and a double treble (dtr) starts with three, so a dtr is one step taller. The names look similar because both use the word treble, which is why the yarn over count is the more reliable thing to read.
Does dtr mean something different in a UK pattern?
Yes, and this one bites. In UK terms dtr means double treble, which is the stitch a US pattern calls a treble (tr). The US double treble is a UK triple treble (trtr). Check which term set the pattern uses before you count yarn overs.
